GBA Student Leadership Programme
What is it?
The Student Leadership Programme (SLP) at GBA is designed to give opportunities for GBA pupils to have a voice, offer activities and give back to the GBA community, all whilst allowing the Leaders to develop a broad range of key skills that will put them ahead of other pupils later-on in life.
The SLP consists of the Head Girl, the Head Boy, the House system and the Committee system.
Head of Student Leadership
A GBA teacher meets once a week with the key stakeholders of the programme to help coordinate activities and implement a structure for pupils to follow to give the organisations the best chance of a successful project. This staff member also attends House and Committee meetings when possible, offering guidance to the pupils and sharing experiences of common issues that can be anticipated and fixed ahead of time.
The Head Girl and Head Boy
These two individuals oversee the running of the Houses and Committees, offering ideas, support and mentorship to the House Captains and the Deputy Head Boys / Girls who lead a Committee. Their role is more of a consultant and promoting collaboration between organisations when appropriate to share the workload and increase the success of the initiative.
House system
The 4 Houses of Stuart, Tudor, York and Windsor are all led by GBA pupils and they meet once a week to discuss House matters, with a GBA member of staff being present who offers mentorship to the pupils. The House would be responsible for activities such as organising Bake Sales, after-school activities or even working out which pupils should sign up for which event at Sports Day. Houses will work independently on some initiatives, however will often collaborate on larger projects. The House Captains regularly make appearances at the Secondary school assemblies and do what they can to promote their House as being the best House in the school.
Committee system
We have 4 Deputy Head Boys or Girls, each one leads a Committee which are:
Each Committee meets once a week, under the supervision of a GBA staff member, where pupils discuss ideas, projects, programmes and initiatives that they would like to see at GBA to improve the school or help those around them. This allows pupils to have an impact in their school, contribute to their community and understand the importance of taking responsibility to instil change. Examples of activities include Movie and Pizza Nights, Plastic Recycling Drives, academic Help Clubs and Charity fundraisers.
Intended Outcome for Leaders
It is hoped that Student Leaders will develop a variety of key skills from the inception of an idea through to the reflection of how it went. These key skills and life experiences immediately gave GBA pupils an advantage when applying for college, university or even a job. When they are asked common questions such as “Tell me when you have led a team”, the GBA pupil will have a bank of experiences to share and highlight their suitability for the role. Leaders will develop their collaboration skills through group discussions; their communication skills through leading meetings, school assemblies, posters and even video recordings; their problem-solving skills when anticipating potential problems to their idea; their creativity to find solutions within the confines of a school; their attention to detail to best prepare an event to help it run smoothly; their decision-making skills when making the final choice after a group discussion; their management skills to relay those decisions to the group and motivate them to follow one particular direction; and their reflection skills to make improvements for future events.
