After the success of last year’s Spelling Bee (our first), we decided to hold it again this year and like before the atmosphere around the Key Stage 2 corridors and classrooms has been tangible.
The format is more or less the same except this time we’re including Year 3 to make it a full Key Stage 2-wide competition, with winners (announced below) for lower Key Stage 2 (Years 3 and 4) and Upper Key Stage 2 (Years 5 and 6).
Over the past couple of weeks, pupils from each class have been practising hard, memorising a set of approximately 100 words in preparation for class-based heats during the build-up to the finals. This process whittled down the competitors to three finalists per class.
The finals
Taking place over two days (yesterday and today), each final kicked off at 10:45am with the finalists taking to the stage in front of their parents and peers to test their spelling prowess.
Sadly, the process of elimination took its effect until there were only three contestants left. Who would take the rostrum in 1st, 2nd and 3rd?
And the Spelling Bee 2019 winners are..?
Lower Key Stage 2
1st: Viera (4 Yellow) | 2nd: Mohammed (3 Red) | 3rd: Mennatallah (4 Blue)
Upper Key Stage 2
1st: Thnyan (6 Blue) | 2nd: Omar (5 Yellow) | 3rd: Yousef (5 Yellow)
A massive well done to all three winners from both days and to everyone who took part in each round – you’re all winners too!
Once again it’s been a great success and we can’t wait for next year’s competition to come around.
